Imperial Yeast's Homebrew Pouches

The Project:

Redesign the existing yeast pouches used by home brewers to start their fermentation process. The two main goals of the redesign was to improve shelf appeal, by creating new color schemes and patterns used as unique identifiers for the 7 yeast strain families, and including additional product information to help the customer understand how best to use the product.

Package Design

Bright colors and engaging patterns were chosen to capture customer’s attention in a retail environment among competitors pouches.

Product identifiers, descriptions, technical information and illustrated instructions were added to provide customers with a better understanding of the yeast strain and which situations are best for their use.

Pattern Design

  • Wild & Sour Family

    Wild Yeast is everywhere and is commonly collected from plants, thus the choice of a wildflower pattern to represent this strain family.

  • Ale Yeast Family

    The ale family is represented by layers of bubbles rising from the krausen on the bottom of a fermenter creating a hearty brew.

  • German Yeast Family

    The German yeast strain family’s pattern was chosen as a play on the classic Oktoberfest diamond pattern using the gradients and colors from Imperial’s new color scheme.

  • Lager Yeast Family

    The colors and pattern, geometrically reminiscent of ice crystals, were chosen to represent the cooler temperatures in which lagers are birthed.

  • Belgian Yeast Family

    A complex pattern for the complex flavor in many Belgian beers. This multi layered design is a modern take on waffle patterned stained glass windows.

  • Imperialis Yeast Family

    Imperialis means from the empire and refers to the family of strains innovated in Imperial’s R&D labs.

  • Seasonal Yeast Family

    This pattern flows into itself as do the seasons, bringing with them change and, much like Imperial’s seasonal strain program, an opportunity for home brewers to experience yeast strains usually reserved for professional brewers.
